Paul Statham was born in Shirebrook, a Derbyshire mining village close to Mansfield. He formed his first band B-MOVIE while still at school. The band signed to London Records and released 3 critically acclaimed singles, rememebrance day, nowhere girl and Marilyn dreams. This was followed by a US tour. Despite Nowhere girl being an international dance hit the band left London Records and after another US tour were signed by Seymour Stein to Sire records releasing the album 'Forever Running', and toured extensively in the U.S and Europe. 4 albums to date have been released including the highly acclaimed John Peel sessions.
After the demise of B-Movie he began working with former/current BAUHAUS vocalist PETER MURPHY and to date they have co-written 8 studio albums including the breakthrough U.S top 40 album "Deep" and one best of album “Wild Birds” as well as completing over 10 full US tours as his keyboard player and 2nd guitarist. While recording the album "Cascade" in Spain he struck up a friendship with producer PASCAL GABRIEL. On return to London, Statham and Gabriel formed an electro pop group called PEACH and along with singer Lisa Lamb signed to Daniel Millers MUTE Records in 1998.The single "On My Own" featured in the hit comedy film Sliding Doors and went on to become a U.S top 30 single, selling over a million copies. An album Audiopeach was released but the band decided not to continue. In 2000 he co-wrote "Here With Me" and "I'm No Angel" with then unsigned singer DIDO. Here with me went on to become a world wide hit and the album 'No Angel 'eventually sold 21 million copies. The next few years were spent collaborating with a number of artists including two MASSIVE ATTACK vocalists SHARA NELSON and DOT ALLISON (co-writing her Arista single Close your eyes), before heading back to pop, co-writing and co producing 2 songs with KYLIE on her international no 1 album ‘Fever' (7 million sales and a U.S no 3 album). At the same time he began collaborating with well known artist and art curator Victor de Circasia who encouraged him to work on visual and audio installations in galleries around the world. From 2001 Statham has had many installations in European galleries and collaborated with the poet Neil Rollinson, painter’s Jonathan McCree, Daisy Cook, Giuliana Fresco, Antonella Piro and Aldo Rota, and sculptors Noriaki Maeda, David Mach & Luisa Valentina. June 2004 saw the release of the mercury prize nominated HELICOPTER GIRL album 'Voodoo Chic' which Statham produced and co-wrote 5 tracks from . A song entitled "blank white sheets" co-written with new Parlophone artist STEPHANIE KIRKHAM appeared on her debut album "That Girl". A co-write with new Universal signing KRISTIAN LEONTIOU entitled "Here I am" was featured on his top 10 single Shining. October 2004 saw the release of Peter Murphy's new album Unshattered including 6 new co -written/produced tracks with Statham. The rest of 2004 was spent co writing with various artists including SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR, LIZ McLARNON , EMMA BUNTON, GERI HALLIWELL and AMY STUDT. A co-written track with Pascal Gabriel and Hannah Robinson entitled "I will be there" was covered by RACHEL STEVENS for her 2nd album "Come And Get It" .
The first half of 2005 saw the completion of former Alisha’s Attic vocalist SHELLY POOLE'S debut alternative country album "Hard time for the dreamer". The entire album was recorded/mixed at Stathams Loki studio. It contains 10 co-written and co-produced songs including the singles "Totally Underwater" , "Hard time for the dreamer " and "Lost in You". Summer 2006 saw Statham working with producer MAGNUS FIENNES on his "freefonix" animated Tv project co writing and co-producing 3 tracks. A track entitled "out of my hands" written with Alice Mcglaughlin has been covered by RnB and MOBO nominated star KEISHA WHITE and was the title track of her album released in Autumn 06. September 2006 also saw collaborations with RnB singer TERRI WALKER and Hip Hop star ESTELLE for the Rhyme4respect project. December 06 saw the start of a writing collaboration with former Spandau Ballet songwriter/guitarist GARY KEMP writing songs for and with a number of artist's. 2 tracks entitled "when I’m here with you" and "Endless circles" were written and recorded with former BLACK BOX RECORDER vocalist SARAH NIXEY for her new album "Sing Memory" released in Feb 2007.The first of these tracks became the first single released in Jan 07.In Sept 06 two instrumental pieces were used in the ROSSINI festival at Pesaro in Italy. Entitled "the Spire" and "architecture" they also accompany Italian painter PAOLO MAZZANTI in a joint exhibition entitled La Vista Del Tempo held at the Palazzo Lazzarini. September 07 saw 2 new pieces of music being written for an exhibition of paintings by legendary Italian painter ALDO ROTA (Maestro of Lombardy) and premiered in Milan at the Spazio Strato.
The start of 08 saw writing sessions with Warner Chappell new signings, Glaswegian singer songwriter PEARL and THE PUPPETS (katie Sutherland) and London based singer/songwriter KIRSTENANA. 3 tracks written for renowned graffiti artist and rapper REMI ROUGH for the REMDOG project.
HELICOPTER GIRL's 3rd album "Metropolitan" was released in the Summer of 2008 on Rob Dickins new label Instant Karma Records featuring 10 new co writes/production and was led by the single"it doesn't get much better than this" . A new track ,"Outsider" was co written in May 08 with WILL YOUNG and Shelly Poole. The song "Why me why now" co-written with Hannah Robinson and produced by Statham was used by new Polydor girl band THE SATURDAYS on their top 5 album "Chasing Light". Autumn 08 was spent writing and recording with new Warner Chappell signing ED DREWETT for his debut album. Ed has now been signed by Virgin/EMI (March 09). A new song "How to get your love" written with Shelly Poole and Charity Hare became the new single for their new alt counry band RED SKY JULY. From Autumn 08 is guest teaching 1 day a week on the MA songwriting course at Bath Spa University.
Spring 09 has started his own project "THE DARK FLOWERS" using various vocalists exploring the dark heart of America over various soundscapes/instrumental pieces.(think Annie Proulx over messed up ambient gothic country music !). Summer to Autumn 09 cowrites include new Arista RnB artist MCLEAN, 7 times mobo nominated rapper KANO and SIMPLE MINDS vocalist JIM KERR (a track "return of the king" features on Kerr’s 2010 new project LOSTBOY AKA debut album. 2011 saw writing with DIANA VICKERS, Universal new signing JAY JAMES PICTON and Island records JESS MILLS, and the completion of 8 new tracks with singer LYDIA BAYLIS for her debut album. Spring 2011 saw the release of PETER MURPHYS new album "Ninth" on Nettwerk records worldwide and featured the co-write "never fall out”.
A collaboration with painter Jonathon MCcree culminated in a live performance at the Asylum Chapel Peckham in October as well as a sound installation and 3 new works from MCcree. More writing with Universal artists BO SARIS and GABRIELLA CILMIE produced tracks that were released in 2013. Appointed Associate Lecturer at SOLENT Universtity one day a week and also at WEST NOTTS VISION on a twice a term week long appointment. Also guest lectured at LEEDS COLLEGE OF MUSIC, LONDON COLLEGE OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC & BIRMINGHAM ACADEMY. Co-wrote with X-Factor winner MATT CARDLE the lead track "its only Love" from his Nov 2012 top 10 album "THE FIRE". 2013 saw the release in the UK and Europe of THE DARK FLOWERS debut album "RADIOLAND" to great critical acclaim with 4 star MOJO and Q reviews…all co-written and produced by Statham. More writing underway with MATT CARDLE and also Australian singer and reality TV star PETER ANDRE (appearing on his ITV reality show "My Life"). New tracks underway with 90's stars RIGHT SAID FRED. Balanced out by a joint painting and sound project at "ill Tavoletto" near Turin with Painter Jonathan McCree and a joint installation at the Natural History Museum in Bra. More left field writing with JIM KERR and also co-wrote and produced the new album "THE AGE OF ILLUSION" from his first post punk band B-MOVIE. Joined the staff at Leeds College of Music for a once a week appointment as compositional tutor on the Popular Music Composition course. A new co written single “ Life Without You” with LYDIA BAYLIS received its first play on GRAHAM NORTONS Saturday radioshow on BBC 2. His co written song with DIDO “Here with Me” which became her breakthrough hit single around the world opens up her “GREATEST HITS” album released in Autumn 2013.
A new song 'Acacia 'written with Italian X factor winner NOEMI was featured on her new album “Made in London” which debuted at number 1 in Italy in its first week . The song as the opening single from the album . Has produced an audio installation piece for an exhibition at Castello di Monticello d’ Alba in collaboration with artist Jo Dennis. The exhibition also includes artist Tim Garwood and Jonathan McCree. After a year of writing in development with 18 year old artist DEVON WRIGHT, she signed to Paul’s publishers WARNER CHAPPELL music in February 2014. This is great leftfield pop (London Grammar, Kate Bush and Lana Del Ray are definitely referenced ). A co written track, 'destination unknown’ written with TINA ARENA with one of Australia’s most successful singers is featured on her new no 1 Australian album RESET. The album had a UK release in Autumn 2014 and was Australia’ biggest selling album of 2013. Was made Professor of Music by Leeds College of Music in Summer 2014. A New track , 'Kill Or Cure' written with SIMPLE MINDS frontman Jim Kerr features on their new Album “BIG MUSIC” which entered the UK charts at no 12 and his co write with Danish electro artist HANNAH SCHNEIDER is featured on her new album "RED LINES" which was released in Autumn 2014 on Sony Denmark. Summer 2014 see’s writing with Universal Music artist IRENE FORNACIARI daughter of legendary Italian singer Zucchero
His first ever band B-Movie Played a one off festival in Meschede Germany with the original line up in July 2014. Writing again with former X Factor winner MATT CARDLE towards his 4th studio album after the top 10 success’s of his previous 3 albums. A series of October workshops went ahead for the MA song writing course at Bath Spa University as well as continuation of work as an associate lecturer at Solent University and at the prestigious Leeds college of Music with the new position of Visiting Professor of Music. A new installation piece “Crossings” with Jonathan McCree was featured at The Waterman’s Gallery in Kew as part of the Thames River celebrations in September 2014.
Ed Drewett whom Paul helped in hiswriting development for a year has now gone on to be one of the UK’s most successful songwriters having written number one hits both in the UK and the US for The wanted, One Direction, Olly Murs and recently Little Mix’s number one “Black Magic”.
2015 has seen an increase in the university related lecturing taking on post graduate studies as well as one to one at Leeds College of Music and an increased role on Solent University’s song writing module. This has resulted in the 2016 introduction of a BA course in song writing.
A 2nd Dark Flowers album is underway again featuring Jim Kerr and the addition of vocalist Lloyd Cole. It has also seen 6 new tracks written with 1990 chart toppers RIGHT SAID FRED ,which have formed the basis of a soon to be released new album entitled ‘EXACTLY ". 2 new songs have been co written with former GIRLS ALOUD star NICLA ROBERTS.
Autumn 2015 has seen the addition of a once a week lecture slot at the prestigious BIMM London songwriting academy.
New albums in Spring 2016 come from his earliest collaborations. Both B-MOVIE and PETER MURPHY have released new material/albums “CLIMATE OF FEAR “ & “WILD BIRDS LIVE TOUR on US label Cleopatra.
"Cuts you up” , Murphys breakthrough US single, (also featured on his new Live album) has been used in the latest series of US hit show AMERICAN HORROR STORY (featuring Lady Gaga) and runs for a full 2 minutes in the final episode.
